Q. I am plagued by this question. I am 26 years old and I live at home. I am currently applying to graduate school. But I want to move out. I am almost thirty but I have bills and living in a decent neighboorhood in Atlanta would be expensive. Do you have any suggestions?
A. I can see why living home at that age is hard. It's common, though. But still, you should be able to move forward towards independence. Not sure if you have a job or will while you're in grad school but even something part-time will keep the cash coming in.
Since you're in a city, the rent can be really hard. Is there a neighborhood that you may consider that you hadn't? Other than that, your best bet is a roomate. I know many people don't like this option (it's so "college" isn't it?) but it's smart to help you get on your feet. Search some ads (maybe craigslist.com or local ads) and maybe meet the prospect at a cafe. Another option would be to utilize your grad school to meet another student to live with while you attend. This will enable you to save money yet still have independence.
Another option is to consider a non-traditional apartment. Can you get a suite in a nice boarding house or consider a studio apartment? What about a duplex? They may not be the most attractive options, but you can get independence this way--and that's well worth some of the sacrifices!
Hope this helps--thanks for reading!!:)Do you have a question for Kristen? Post it here and she'll answer it publicly on her blog!
