The 2010 Job Outlook for New Grads

It's that time of year when all the "experts" put together their forecasts for new grads. And in just about every case--and especially in this economy--it doesn't look good.

So what do you do: Listen to the reports or brush them off? If you listen to the reports, they will likely leave you feeling deflated, because many elude to there being few job prospects for new grads. That can really sink in...after all, if a top-notch career professional got laid off, what qualifies you to have a job?

My vote is to brush off the reports and ignore all the hype. Too many people get all upset when they read these reports and that negative energy can weigh you down. Instead, take all that energy--and everything you have to offer--and put it into your job hunt. There's nothing else that you really can do. Too many people are waiting things out while things get better and missing out on the chance to get a job.

So what do you think of the 2010 grad job outlook? Is it all hype to screen out new players? Are there really NO jobs out there?

There are jobs, but new graudates are not getting them because they have no experience. I graduated with my bachelors last May. I got a job in June, bad pay, no benfits, it stinks and its very frustrating.

I almost want to roll my eyes any time I hear someone at my job say "There are no jobs! Every business is suffering and no one is hiring." I do not want to belittle the situation by any means as I have been without a raise for a longer period of time than I expected and I have read of many graduates looking for work for well over a year.

What Jenn mentioned is true and has been true for some time. In my field of study, I have seen quiet a few of my former classmates settle for design jobs at Office Depot or laying out the circular for Brandsmart U.S.A. Then there are jobs that will require one to have 2-3 years experience in an Advertising Agency or in a position as a Package Designer. Well, all I can say is continue to be diligent, passionate, and try to look at ever moment as a learning experience rather than a negative one.

As a Graphic Designer, I feel that it is mandatory to step out and grow. Thankfully, there are annual design conferences and countless websites that offer free space to host portfolios and even offer job listings -- not to mention Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin -- that can aid us in this process.

So what is the 2010 job outlook for new grads? One portfolio school stated "Job postings for full-time positions to our graduates in the first quarter of 2010 were up over 300% compared to the last quarter of 2009. The hiring forecast is really looking good. In fact, 60% of the graduating class from San Francisco (graduated just over a week ago) have already been hired."

In conclusion, it will not be an easy journey, but anything is possible. Do not let your own self proclaimed limitations rob you of what you truly want out of life!
